Question
Why did the Cripps Mission come to India? State any three proposals of the Cripps Mission.
Answer in Brief
Solution
In 1942, the British government dispatched the Cripps Mission to India in an attempt to secure Indian assistance and collaboration in their military operations during World War II. The Cripps Mission has three recommendations:
- Offer of Dominion Status: The Cripps Mission suggested giving India Dominion Status, which would grant it the freedom to choose its own future constitution and admit it as an equal member of the British Commonwealth.
- Constitution-making body: Formation of a commission responsible for drafting the constitution following the war, with representatives from Native States and British India.
- Provincial Autonomy: Provinces had the option to negotiate with the British Government directly if they wanted to stay outside the Indian Union.
