Question

Why drying agents such as \[\ce{P2O5}\] and \[\ce{CaCl2}\] are not used to dry \[\ce{NH3}\]?

Chemical Equations/Structures
Short Answer

Solution

The drying agent used is \[\ce{CaO}\] in the case of ammonia.

Other drying agents like \[\ce{P2O5}\] and \[\ce{CaCl2}\] are not used. As ammonia is basic, it reacts with them.

\[\ce{6NH3 + P2O5 + 3H2O -> \underset{[Ammonium metaphosphate]}{2(NH4)3PO4}}\]

\[\ce{CaCl2 +4NH3 -> \underset{a complex compound}{CaCl2*4NH3}}\]
