- Sometimes when a species is critically endangered, special measures have to be undertaken to protect it.
- It might be protected in captivity, as one of the measures of protection. This is called Ex situ conservation. e.g., Wildlife safari parks, zoological parks and botanical gardens.
- Seed banks are established to conserve wild varieties of food grains and vegetables.
