1. The placenta is a flattened, discoidal structure in a pregnant woman's uterus.
2. It is a transient link between foetal and maternal circulation.
3. It promotes gaseous exchange, nutritional delivery, and elimination of excretory wastes produced by the foetus.
4. The placenta is made up of a foetal part made up of chorionic villi and a maternal part made up of the uterine wall. As a result, it is known as the haemochorial placenta.
5. The placenta also serves as an endocrine tissue, producing hormones such as hCG and progesterone.
