Any malware software mentioned in the press is referred to as a computer virus by the majority of the media and everyday end-users. Thankfully, the majority of ransomware applications aren't viruses. Worms have existed for much longer than computer viruses, dating back to the days of mainframe computers. Hackers' preferred tool of choice has shifted from computer worms to Trojan malware systems. Trojans pass themselves off as legitimate programs, but they contain malicious code.

Most malware today is a mix of common malicious applications, including portions of Trojans and worms, as well as the odd virus.
