Chipko movement: The chipko movement or chipko Andolan refers to a forest conservation
movement.
- The locals of Garhwal Himalaya’s in 1974, showed enormous bravery in protecting trees from the axe of contractors by hugging them
- The main aim of the chipko movement is to stop the felling of trees
- Sunderalal Bahvgana was the leader of the chipko movement.
- It was a nonviolent, social and ecological movement, in which many of the villagers sacrificed
their life. - The chipko protests achieved a major victory. in 1980 with a 15 years ban on tree felling in the Himalayan forests of the state by the order of Mrs Indira Gandhi.
- The chipko type movement dates back to 1730 AD when in Khejarli village of Rajasthan, many hundreds of people sacrifice their life for conservation and protection of trees.
