i. The Women’s Movement started in the British period. In the postindependence phase, several issues for their empowerment have come to the fore.

ii. The movement continues to gather momentum by percolating into the rural and tribal parts of the country.

iii. Women from different professions like journalism, academics, medicines and corporates have joined in the mission of empowering women.

iv. The Women’s Movement is considered to be the most prolific and pluralist movement. It has gone through several phases.

v. The basic objectives of the movement are as follows:

  1. Struggle for equal rights 
  2. Elimination of discriminatory practices 
  3. Realisation and actualisation of women’s potential to empower themselves.

vi. The participants in the movement are women activists, enlightened men, voluntary NGOs and government itself. It continues to operate vehemently with shifting paradigms and perspectives.
