Puppetry is a type of theatre or awareness that makes use of puppets in various ways. It is mostly used to raise awareness about social concerns through stories. This necessitates visually appealing and colourful puppets, compelling texts, and vocal modulation by the puppeteers. Humans, known as sutradhar, manipulate and animate the puppets.

In India, puppet shows are known by different names in different parts of the country.

1. It is known as Pavakathakali (Pavakoothu) in Kerala. Puppets are typically presented in the form of a play in this setting.
2. It is called Putulnach in Bengal, where strings are used to move the puppets. The Sutoputul are these puppets.
3. This skill is called Kathputli in Rajasthan.
