Question
Read the extract and write the appreciation based on the aspect given below:
Is anybody happier because you passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? This day is almost over and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along? Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng? Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way, Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today? |
You may use the following points for writing the appreciation in about 100-150 words:
- About the poem, significance of the title
- Form of the poem, theme and its significance
- Poetic style, language features/poetic devices
- Message, values, morals in the poem
- Your opinion about the poem
Solution
The poem 'Have You Earned Your Tomorrow' is composed by Edgar Guest. It contains four line stanzas, the uniform rhyme scheme of 'aabb' and so on. There are questions posed to the readers throughout the entire article. Two to three questions that focus on how one treats others are included in each stanza. The speaker of the poem asks a question concerning the reader's conduct in the final two stanzas. In the poem's epilogue, the speaker reminds the audience that whether or not one has tomorrow depends on God. Therefore, if one wishes to see the next day, one should carefully evaluate their activities. The poet has used interrogation as an emphatic poetic device, making the readers think about their actions very carefully.
