Question
Write the classification of polymers on the basis of intermolecular forces.
Short Note
Solution
- Elastomers: Elastomers, the elastic polymers, have weak van der Waals type of intermolecular forces.
e.g. Buna - S, Vulcanized rubber. - Fibres: Polymeric solids which form threads are called fibres. The fibres possess high tensile strength. They have strong intermolecular forces.
e.g. Terylene, Keratin, Nylon 6, 6. - Thermoplastic polymers: polymers are capable of repeated softening on heating and hardening on cooling.
e.g. Polythene, Polystyrene. - Thermosetting polymers: They cannot be softened or remoulded on heating once they are moulded.
e.g. Bakelite.
