The burning of fossil fuels produces large amounts of acidic gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. These acidic gases combine with rainwater to form acids such as sulphuric acid and nitric acid. Acid rains have been observed in many parts of the world after the industrial revolution in Europe.
