Rate of Chemical Reaction

Chemical reactions occur at different speeds. Some reactions happen quickly, while others take a long time to complete. Based on their speed, they can be classified into two groups:

1. Fast Reactions (Occur Quickly)

  • Cooking gas starts burning on ignition.
  • Effervescence forms when baking soda is added to dilute acid.
  • A white precipitate forms when dilute sulphuric acid is added to barium chloride solution.

2. Slow Reactions (Take Time)

  • Iron articles undergo rusting.
  • Rocks erode to form soil.
  • Alcohol forms when yeast is mixed with a glucose solution under proper conditions.

The rate of a reaction can change with different conditions. For example, milk takes longer to turn into curd in winter, but the process speeds up in summer due to higher temperatures.
