My shadow

Summary:

This story talks about our shadow and how it is with us continuously and how it grows with us but not like us how sometimes is it very long or sometimes it is very small and it speaks about when we wake up before the sun our shadow is still asleep.

Stanza by stanza explanation:

 1st stanza:

I have a little shadow that goes
in and out with me.
And what can be the use of him is
more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the
heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me,
When I jump into my bed.

In the first stanza, the poet says that he has a shadow where ever he goes and he and the shadow are extremely alike from his heels right up to his head and he can see his shadow in bed right before he jumps in. The little boy notices every little thing that he and the shadow have in common.

2nd stanza

The funniest thing about him is the way
he likes to grow
Not at all like proper children, which is
always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an
India-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that
There's none of him at all.

In the second stanza, the poet speaks about the way the shadow likes to grow, it does not grow how normal children do it grows very slowly, and sometimes it grows taller than an India-rubber ball, and sometimes it is soo little that there is none of it at all. The little boy thinks that the shadow plays tricks with him because of its size sometimes it grows and sometimes it's not even there so the boy thinks the shadow is playing with him.

3rd stanza

One morning, very early, before the
Sun I was up,
I rose and found the shining dew
on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an
arrant sleepyhead.
Had stayed at home behind me and was
Fast asleep in bed.

In the third stanza, the poet speaks about how he woke up one morning before the sun rose and got up and how his shadow did not get up and slept in and he left but his shadow stayed back home and slept. and as it is a dewfall morning the little boy thinks that the shadow is still in bed and he thinks that the shadow is still asleep and is excited to go out alone.
