Summary
This poem written by LOIS LBNSKI tells us about the people around us and how they live on a daily basis and how some people have to struggle and how some people live with ease and has given very nice examples to show the difference in people's life.
Stanza by stanza explanation
Sing a song of people
Walking fast or slow;
People in the city,
Up and down they go.
In the first stanza, the poet talks about how the people in the city are walking fast and slow some going to work some walking for leisure some who need to get to places at a certain time some when can go where they want whenever they want.
People on the sidewalk,
People on the bus;
People passing, passing,
In back and front of us.
In the second stanza, the poet says that there are people everywhere there are people walking on the road there are people on the bus going from one place to another there are people passing from one place to another from the front and the back of us.
People on the subway
Underneath the ground;
People riding taxis
Round and round and round.
In the third stanza, the poet says that there are people everywhere using various modes of transport there are people on the subway and people underneath the ground using underground transportation. There are people on the street driving in taxis around.
People with their hats on,
Going in the doors;
People with umbrellas
When it rains and pours.
In the fourth stanza, the poet speaks about how people with their hats on are going in from one door to another and how when it rains the people go around with different umbrellas.
People in tall buildings
And in stores below;
Riding elevators
Up and down they go.
In the fifth stanza, the poet says that there are people who live in tall buildings, and all the people who have stores in those buildings have to use the elevator to go up and down.
People walking singly,
People in a crowd;
People saying nothing,
People talking loud.
In the sixth stanza, the poet says that there are different kinds of people outside some who don't say anything and some who are extremely loud some people are in crowds and they are silent while some are loud.
People laughing, smiling,
Grumpy people too;
People who just hurry
And never look at you!
In the seventh stanza, the poet says that people outside are out for various reasons some are happy laughing smiling, and excited but then there are also people who grumpy and sad there are some people who need to get to a certain place and they are running late so won't even look at you.
Sing a song of people
Who like to come and go;
Sing of city people
You see but never know!
In the eighth stanza, the poet says that you can see the people that are moving around you. You see all of them and you might even say hi to a few but you will never know the entire city of people.
