Discuss the causes of the breaking of Joint families in India.

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

India, as a country has been witnessing a steady decline in the joint family structure, not just in the cities, but also in rural areas.

The shift has occurred due to the following reasons:

Industrialization and Urbanization: The impact of industrialization and urbanization is felt everywhere. The movement of the people towards urban areas and industrial zones for better education and job opportunities has resulted in the disintegration of a family from joint to nuclear. It has led to the preference for families that are smaller in size.

Westernization: Migration of the young adults to urban centers and their adaptation of modern western – views in family life and structures have also caused a disintegration of the traditional joint family structures. The spirit of independence asserted by these young adults in terms of choice of career and spouse from other communities has added to the reasons for family disintegration.

Level of education: There is a positive correlation between the level of education and the incidence of people’s mobility to urban centers and consequently a shift from joint family to a nuclear family. Thus, education has greatly affected joint family ties.

Spirit of individualism: It is one of the most important causes which has destroyed the joint family life. The individuals think of themselves rather than for the welfare of the members of the whole family. It has also affected the authority structure of the family.

Economic independence of women: Women today are becoming more independent financially. The education and employment opportunities are available for women as well as men. The economic independence has increased their status but has also affected their attitude towards authority, structure and consequently their family life.

The present study…deals with a Muslim biradri (community) called the Multani Lohars. ... Karkhanedar is a vernacular term used for a person engaged in the business of manufacturing of which he is generally the owner…The karkhanas under study operate in domestic conditions and, therefore, have certain pervasive effects on the life of the karkhanedars who work in them. …The following case illustrates this. Mahmood, aged forty years, was living with his two younger brothers, one of whom was married. He had three children and was the head of the complex household. …All the three brothers were employed in various karkhanas and factories as skilled workers. Mahmood successfully fabricated replica of a motor part the import of which had been banned. This greatly encouraged him to start his own karkhana…Later it was decided that two karkhanas should be set up to manufacture the motor part. One was to be owned by the two elder brothers, and the other by the youngest, provided he set up a separate household. Rasheed set up an independent household, consisting of his wife and unmarried children. Therefore, one complex household, comprising three married brothers, gave birth to a simple household as a result of new entrepreneurial opportunities. Excerpted from S.M. Akram Rizvi, ‘Kinship and Industry among the Muslim Karkhanedars in Delhi’, in Imtiaz Ahmad, ed. Family, Kinship and Marriage among Muslims in India, New Delhi, Manohar, 1976, pp. 27- 48.
