Stanovich defines rationality as "adaptive reasoning, good judgment, and good decision-making." According to Dr. Albert Ellis, sensible people exhibit the following characteristics:

1. Understanding both self-interest and social interest: Rational people recognize which choices help them grow and accept responsibility for their actions. They also take care not to violate the rights of others.
2. Self-direction: The individual does not seek excessive attention or support from others since he or she accepts responsibility for his or her own life.
3. Tolerance: The willingness to accept other people's views and behaviour patterns that differ from our own.
4. Flexibility: Rational people think and behave in a flexible and unbiased manner.
5. Self acceptance and responsibility: A rational individual embraces oneself or herself unconditionally and accepts responsibility for his or her thoughts, emotions, and behavior.
