- Lok Sabha: The people directly elect all Lok Sabha members. Any voter can vote for any candidate in his constituency. A candidate who receives the most votes out of all the contenders in a constituency is elected to represent the people of that constituency.
- Rajya Sabha: Using the proportional representation single transferable vote system, members of the State Legislative Assembly choose Rajya Sabha members indirectly. Each state legislative assembly elects the number of representatives specified in the constitution. The President selects 12 members from among those who have achieved distinction in the fields of art, science, literature and social service.
