प्रश्न
Discuss the following with reference to the Indian Parliament:
Tenure of the members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
संक्षेप में उत्तर
उत्तर
Tenure of its members:
- Lok Sabha: Its normal period is five years, beginning on the day of its first session. This term can be prolonged for one year under an emergency, but a new Lok Sabha election must be held within six months of the emergency ending. The President can dissolve the Lok Sabha before the end of its term on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, or when a no-confidence vote is carried, demonstrating that the government lacks a majority.
- Rajya Sabha: The Rajya Sabha is a quasi-permanent house. It cannot be dissolved like the Lok Sabha. Every two years, one-third of its members retire and elections are held to fill the vacancies. Members of the Rajya Sabha serve for six years.
