- In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) down-graded the status of Pluto to that of the dwarf planet.
- The three criteria of the IAU for a full-sized planet are
- It is in orbit around the Sun.
- It has sufficient Mass to assume nearly a round shape.
- It has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
- Since Pluto is able to meet only the first two of the criteria, it is no more a planet.
