- Population explosion
The world population is increasing at the rate of 2 persons per second, or 2,00,000 persons per day, or 60 lakh persons per month, or approximately seven crore per year. This rapid increase in population is called a population explosion. This is due to the decrease in death rate and the lack of desired decrease in birth rate. - Increase in population and its causes
The increased population in any area at a given time is called population growth. The following are the reasons for population growth –- Due to health facilities, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) have decreased.
- Increase in the number of reproductive individuals.
- Improvement in the standard of living due to good health services.
- Due to illiteracy, people do not have knowledge of the means of family planning and the methods of family planning are not fully adopted.
- Increase in the production of food grains due to scientific and technological progress.
- Many epidemics can be eradicated through community health programmes.
- Due to low social status, most poor people believe that the more children they have, the more money they will earn by working.
