प्रश्न

What do you mean by nuclear energy? What is responsible for its release?

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

Energy released by the combining of nuclei of an atom or by the decay of an unstable radioactive nucleus during a nuclear reaction, i.e., during fusion or fission, is known as nuclear energy. Mass defects, also referred to as loss of mass, are what produce nuclear energy.

Which of the following can undergo nuclear fusion reaction?

(a) uranium

Explain why, in a nuclear reactor, the chain reaction stops if the control rods are fully inserted into the graphite.

Two statements are given - one labelled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R).

Assertion (A): In the process of nuclear fission, the amount of nuclear energy generated by the fission of an atom of uranium is so tremendous that it produces 10 million times the energy produced by the combustion of an atom of carbon from coal.
Reason (R): The nucleus of a heavy atom such as uranium, when bombarded with low energy neutrons, splits apart into lighter nuclei. The mass difference between the original nucleus and the product nuclei gets converted to tremendous energy.

A certain nucleus X has a mass number 14 and atomic number 6. The nucleus X changes to `"_7Y^14` after the loss of a particle. A radioactive substance is oxidized. What change would you expect to take place in the nature of its radioactivity? Give a reason for your answer.

An element 92U238 losses one alpha particle, and then one β-particle and then again one β- particle to get the final nucleus bQa.
