Bipolar disorder is often referred to as manic depressive disorder. The person goes through alternate phases of two states: mania and depression. Mania symptoms include excessive energy, enthusiasm, a decreased need for sleep, a lack of touch with reality, delusions, etc. Symptoms of depression include low energy and motivation, loss of interest in daily tasks, intense sadness, apathy, hopelessness, weariness, guilt, and so on. Bipolar disorder is caused mostly by hereditary factors, neurotransmitter imbalances such as dopamine, and environmental variables such as traumatic events.
