प्रश्न

Write the names and formula of the products formed when Methane reacts with : (i) Chlorine (ii) bromine. Write the chemical equations.

संक्षेप में उत्तर

उत्तर

(i) When methane reacts with chlorine in the presence of sunlight or UV light, it undergoes substitution reaction to form Tetrachloromethane.

\[\ce{CH4 + Cl2 ->[hv]\underset{\text{Chloromethane}}{CH3Cl} + HCl}\]

\[\ce{CH3Cl + Cl2 ->[hv]\underset{\text{Dichloromethane}}{CH2Cl2} + HCl}\]

\[\ce{CH2Cl2 + Cl2 ->[hv]\underset{\text{Trichloromethane}}{CHCl3} + HCl}\]

\[\ce{CHCl3 + Cl2 ->[hv]\underset{\text{Tetrachloromethane}}{CCl4 }+ HCl}\]

(ii) When it reacts with bromine it forms Tetrabromomethane

CH4 + Br2 → CH3Br + HCl

CH3Br + BrCH2Br2 + HCl

Dibromomethane

CH2Br2 + Br2 → CHBr3 + HCl

Tribromo methane

CHBr3 + Br2 → CBr4 + HCl

Tetrabromomethane
