Echo:

An echo is the repetition of a sound that occurs when the sound waves reflect off a surface, such as a tall building or a mountain, and return to the listener. This happens because the sound travels to the obstacle and reflects back.

Characteristics:

1. The human brain retains the sensation of sound for about 0.1 seconds. For a sound to be heard as a distinct echo, the reflected sound must take at least 0.1 seconds to reach back to the listener after the original sound.

2. At a speed of sound of 344 m/s (at 22°C), the sound must travel a total distance of: Distance = Speed × Time = 344 m/s × 0.1 s = 34.4 m.

  • The obstacle must be at least 17.2 meters (half the total distance) away to hear a distinct echo.
  • This minimum distance changes with the temperature of the air, as sound speed varies with temperature.

3. Echoes can be heard multiple times due to successive reflections of sound from multiple surfaces, such as walls or cliffs. Phenomena like the rolling of thunder occur because sound reflects repeatedly between clouds and the land, producing prolonged sound.
