प्रश्न

A glass slab is placed over a page on which the word VIBGYOR is printed with each letter in its corresponding colour.

  1. Will the image of all the letters be in the same place?
  2. If not, the state which letter will be raised to the maximum. Give a reason for your answer.
थोडक्यात उत्तर

उत्तर

  1. The image of all the letters of the word VIBGYOR in their corresponding colours will not be at the same place.
  2. The letter of violet colour (i.e. V) appears to be raised maximum, while the letter of red colour (i.e. R) appears to be raised minimum.
Since apparent depth = `"real depth"/"refractive index"` and the refractive index of glass is most for the violet light while least for the red light, therefore the apparent depth is least for violet and most for the red.

A student traces the path of a ray of light passing through a rectangular glass slab and marks the angle of incidence i, angle of refraction r and angle of emergence e, as shown.

The correctly marked angle(s) is/are

(A) ∠ i only

(B) ∠ e only

(C) ∠ r only

(D) ∠ i and ∠ e

Draw a ray diagram to show the refraction of light through a glass slab and mark angle of refraction and the lateral shift suffered by the ray of light while passing through the slab.

On the basis of the experiment, "To trace the path of a ray of light through a rectangular glass slab", students of a class arrived at which one of the following conclusions?

(A) Angle of incidence is greater than the angle of emergence.

(B) Angle of emergence is smaller than the angle of refraction.

(C) Emergent ray is parallel to the refracted ray.

(D) Incident ray and emergent ray are parallel to each other.

How is the reflection of light ray from a plane mirror different from the refraction of light ray as it enters a block of glass?

The diagram alongside shows the refraction of a ray of light from air to a liquid.

  1. Write the values of (i) angle of incidence, (ii) angle of refraction.
  2. Use Snell’s law to find the refractive index of liquid with respect to air.

Complete Fig. 4.32 to show the path of the ray of single colour as it enters the prism and emerges out of it. Mark the angles wherever necessary.

(i) What is the relation between the refractive index of water with respect to air `("_aμ_\text(w))` and the refractive index of air with respect to water `("_\text(w)μ_ a)` .
(ii) If the refractive index of water with respect to air `("_aμ_\text(w))` is`5/3`. Calculate the refractive index of air with respect to water `("_\text(w)μ_ a)` .

Trace a ray of light incident at 30° on a surface if travelling from glass to air. What is the angle of refraction in this case? (R.I. for glass = 3/2).

The speed of light in air is 3 × 10ms-1. Calculate the speed of light in water. The refractive index of water is 4/3.
