प्रश्न

A metallic spherical shell has an inner radius R1 and outer radius R2. A charge Q is placed at the centre of the spherical cavity. What will be surface charge density on (i) the inner surface, and (ii) the outer surface?

उत्तर

A charge Q is placed at the centre of the spherical cavity. So, the charge induced at the inner surface of the sphere will be –Q and at outer surface of the sphere is +Q.

The surface charge density on the inner surface `sigma_1 = "Charge"/"Area" = (-Q)/(4pi  R_1^2)`

Surface charge density on the outer surface `sigma_2 = (+Q)/(4piR_2^2)`

Hence, (i) `(-Q)/(4pi  R_1^2)` (ii) `(+Q)/(4pi  R_2^2)`

Which of the following graphs shows the variation of electric field E due to a hollow spherical conductor of radius R as a function of distance from the centre of the sphere?

Given below are two statements:

  • Statement I: The electric force changes the speed of the charged particle and hence changes its kinetic energy; whereas the magnetic force does not change the kinetic energy of the charged particle.
  • Statement II: The electric force accelerates the positively charged particle perpendicular to the direction of the electric field. The magnetic force accelerates the moving charged particle along the direction of the magnetic field.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
