2) The impedance of the circuit

3) Current flowing in the circuit

b) If the frequency of the applied emf is 50 Hz, what is the value of the capacitance of the capacitor ‘C’?

a) E = 220 V, R = 160, C = Capacitor

Current leads voltage by ϕ=tan-1(34)

Find XC,Z,I

a) Given θ = tan-1(34)  ...(1)

but θ = tan-1(XCR) ...(2)

From 1 and 2

tan θ  = 3/4

but tan θ = XCR

34=XCR 

∵ R = 160

34=XC160

XC=34×160

XC=120 Ω

Impedance Z = R2+XC2

=[(160)2+(120)2]1/2

Z = 200 Ω

I0=VZ=2202000=1.1AI0=1.1A

b) f = 50 Hz

XC=120Ω

XC=12πfC

C=1(2πf)×(XC)=12π×50×120=2.65×10-5F=26.5μF

C=26.5μF
