Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance is the ability of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system to provide oxygen-rich blood to working muscles throughout extended physical exercise. It is an important part of overall physical fitness and is required for activities that involve sustained exertion, such as running, swimming, cycling, or any endurance activity.

Cardio-respiratory endurance is most evident:

  1. At rest, and
  2. During sustained activities involving the whole body, such as running, swimming, and cycling long distances, and also during recovery.
  3. It is the most essential physical fitness component, which is evident in everyday activities and most forms of sports. Most of the benefits attributed to improved physical fitness are in fact due to increased cardio-respiratory endurance.
