Lifeguards are required. Even the guards are aware that it is unlikely that they will be needed. Even though there has never been a fatal athlete in an Olympic pool, certain aquatic events can be risky: Water polo is a rough-and-tumble sport; divers can smack the water; synchronized swimmers have suffered concussions in sports. Athletes also run the risk of suffering crippling cramps, having a heart attack, and falling headfirst into the pool walls. Although they don't have a very exciting job, they do have a great view of all the Olympic action.
