Graphite anodes are continuously replaced during the electrolysis of alumina.

The oxidation process takes place at the anode. In this process, oxygen is released which oxidises the anode made up of graphite to carbon monoxide which further oxidises to give carbon dioxide. Therefore, the anode is needed to be replaced from time to time.
