What property of ammonia is demonstrated by the fountain experiment?

In the fountain experiment, two properties of ammonia are demonstrated. It is highly soluble in water. It's an alkaline gas. If a few drops of phenolphthalein solution were earlier added to the water, it would turn pink as it entered the flask.
