The characteristics of modernisation are as follows:

1. Scientific temperament: It refers to the development of a scientific way of understanding and explaining any phenomenon. It may come from education based on scientific methods as well as emphasis on the need for empirical evidence to support given arguments.
2. Rational outlook: It is linked to the notion of rationalism. Scientific reasoning explains causal relationships between factors. There is a shift to secular and rational values from spiritual and religious values. 
3. Technological advancement: Several definitions of modernisation tend to emphasise on advancement in the use of technology. It calls for precision techniques, specialised skills and accuracy.
4. Openness to new ideas: Being ‘modern’ cannot be limited to only using modern devices or gadgets. There is a willingness to receive new ideas, examine alternatives, find new pathways, and explore creative ways to solve problems.
5. Critical thinking: It refers to the ability of critical evaluation. People who claim to be modern are willing to examine daily events, literature, culture, art, customs, and beliefs from a critical point of view. They are able to explain the constructive and destructive aspects of a phenomenon. Self-criticism and willingness to introspect critically are also an aspect of critical thinking.
