The characteristics of modernisation are as follows:

- Openness to new ideas: Being ‘modern’ cannot be limited to only using modern devices or gadgets. There is a willingness to receive new ideas, examine alternatives, find new pathways, and explore creative ways to solve problems.
- Critical thinking: It refers to the ability of critical evaluation. People who claim to be modern are willing to examine daily events, literature, culture, art, customs, and beliefs from a critical point of view. They are able to explain the constructive and destructive aspects of a phenomenon. Self-criticism and willingness to introspect critically are also an aspect of critical thinking.
