Question
66g of ammonium sulphate is produced by the action of ammonia on sulphuric acid. Write a balanced equation and calculate mass of ammonia required.
Solution
\[\ce{2NH3 + H2SO4 -> [NH4]2SO4}\]
Mass of Ammonia = 2 [NH3] = 2 [14 + 3] = 34 g
Mass of [NH4]2SO4 = 2 [14 + 4] + 32 + 64 = 132 g
Gas used to produce 132 g of (NH4)SO4 = 34 g
∴ Gas used to produce 66 g of (NH4)SO4
= `(34 xx 66)/132`
= 17 g
