In the light of the above information, trace the character arc of Matilda in Guy De Maupassants' 'The Necklace', in about 120 words.
Solution
Guy De Maupassant's "The Necklace" depicts Matilda's journey from unhappiness to destitution and despair. Matilda's frustration with her middle-class life causes her to see herself as a victim of fate and social injustice. Her constant quest of fortune and status eventually leads to her ruin. After discovering the necklace she stole was a fake, she falls into poverty and works frantically to repay the debt. Matilda's experiences lead to a transformation, as she realises the implications of her pride and selfishness.
