Question

A Golf set was available for Rs 36,408.96, which included three successive discounts of 16%, 14% and 10% on the marked price and a sales tax of 12%. Find the marked price of the golf set.

Sum

Solution

Let the list price be x

First rebate = 16 % of x

Cost of golf set after first discount= x - 16 % of x

`= "x" - (16 "x")/100`

`= (84 "x")/100`

= 0.84 x

Seoond rebate = 14 % of 0.84 x

Cost of golf set after seoond disoount = 0.84 x - 14 % of o.84 x

`= 0.84 "x" - (14/100 xx 0.84  "x")`

`= 0.84  "x" - 0.1176  "x"`

= 0.7224 x

Third rebate = 10 % of 0.7224 x

Cost of golf set after third discount

= 0. 7224 x - 10 % of 0. 7224 x

= 0. 7224 x - `(10/100 xx 0.7224  "x")`

= 0.7224 x- 0.07224 x

= 0.65016 x

Sales tax = 12 % of cost of golf set

= `12/100 xx 0.65016  "x"`

= 0.078019 x

Total cost = cost +sales tax

= 0.65016 x + 0.078019 x = 0.728179 x

But total cost = Rs 36,408.96

⇒ 0.728179x = Rs 36,408. 96

⇒ x = `36408.96/0.728179`

⇒ x = Rs 50,000.01 = Rs 50,000

Hence, Basic price of golf set = Rs 50,000
