Question
A refrigerator was available for Rs 36,842.96, which included three successive discounts of 20%, 15% and 10% on the list price and a sales tax of 7.5% on the remainder. Find the list price of the refrigerator.
Solution
Let the list price be x
First rebate = 20 % of x
Cost of refrigerator after first discount = x - 20 % of x
`= "x" - (20 "x")/100`
`= (80 "x")/100`
Second rebate =15 % of `(80 "x")/100`
Cost of refrigerator after seoond discount
= `(80 "x")/100 - 15 % "of" (80 "x")/100`
=`(80 "x")/100 - (15/100 xx (80 "x")/100)`
=`(80 "x")/100 - (12 "x")/100`
=`(68 "x")/100`
Third rebate = 10 % of `(68 "x")/100`
Cost of refrigerator after third discount
=`(68 "x")/100 - 10 % "of" (68 "x")/100`
= `(68 "x")/100 - (10/100 xx (68 "x")/100)`
= `(68 "x")/100 - (68 "x")/1000`
=`(612 "x")/1000`
Sales tax = 7 .5% of oost of refrigerator
=`7.5/100 xx (612 "x")/1000`
=`(459 "x")/10000`
Total oost = cost +sales tax
=`(612 "x")/1000 + (459 "x")/10000`
= `(6579 "x")/10000`
But total oost = Rs 36,842.40
⇒ `(6579 "x")/10000` = Rs 36842.40
⇒ x = `(36842.40 xx 10000)/6579`
⇒ x = Rs 56000
Hence, Basic price of refrigerator = Rs 56,000
