Question
Nirmala went to a shop to buy a Titan watch. The cost of the watch was Rs 3,250. The rate of sales tax is 12%. The shopkeeper gave her a discount such that she got the watch for only Rs 3,248. Find the discount given by the shopkeeper.
Solution
Let the reduced price be x
Rate of sales tax = 12 %
Therefore, total amount of the watch
= x + 12 % of x = `1 + 12/100 "x" = (112 "x")/100`
But the total amount of the watch paid =Rs 3,248
Therefore, reduced price =
⇒ `(112 "x")/100` = Rs 3248
⇒ x = Rs `324800 / 112`
⇒ x = Rs 2900
Reduction needed= Rs (3,250 - 2,900) =Rs 350
