Question

A person swims 100 m in the first 40 s, 80 m in the next 40 s and 45 m in the last 20 s. What is the average speed?

Derivation

Solution

Given: s1 = 100 m, t1 = 40 s, s2 = 80 m, t2 = 40 s, s3 = 45 m, t3 = 20 s

Average speed = ?

Average speed = `"Total distance"/"Total time"`

Average speed = `(s_1 + s_2 + s_3)/(t_1 + t_2 + t_3)`

= `(100+80+45)/(40+40+20)`

= `225/100`

= 2.25 m/s
