Question

A recipe for raspberry jelly calls for 5 cups of raspberry juice and `2 1/2` cups of sugar. Find the amount of sugar needed for 6 cups of the juice?

Sum

Solution

The requirement of sugar for 5 cups of raspberry juice = `2 1/2` cups = `5/2` cups

∴ The requirement of sugar for 1 cup of raspberry juice = `(5/2 ÷ 5)` cups

= `(5/2 xx 1/5)` cups = `1/2` cups

Thus, the requirement of sugar for 6 cups of the raspberry juice = `6 xx 1/2` cups = 3 cups
