Question
Ammonia burns in oxygen, as shown below.
\[\ce{4NH3 + 3O2 -> 2N2 + 6H2O}\]
If 240 cc of ammonia is burnt in 300 cc of oxygen, find out the composition of the resultant gaseous mixture at room temperature.
Solution
\[\ce{4NH3 + 3O2 -> 2N2 + 6H2O}\] (vapour)
By Gay Lussac's Law
For N2:
4 vol. of NH3 results 2 vol. of N2
240 cc of NH3 will result = `(2 xx 240)/4`
= 120 cc of N2
For H2O (vapour phase):
4 Vol. of NH3 results 6 vol. of H2O
240 cc of NH3 will result = `(240 xx 6)/4`
= 360 cc of H2O
For O2:
4 vol. of NH3 reacts with 3 vol. of H2O
240 cc of NH3 will react with = `(3 xx 240)/4`
= 180 cc of O2
