"Civil disobedience had triumphed for the first time in modern India." When and how did it happen?

Answer in Brief

Solution

Gandhiji arrived in Champaran in April 1917 to protest the unjust sharecropping system. He attempted to learn more about the system from a few British officials, but they refused to divulge specifics to an outsider. Gandhiji settled in Motihari, the capital of Champaran, to investigate further. He was served a notice to depart Champaran immediately while he was there, but he refused to comply and was summoned to court. When the peasants of Champaran learned of Gandhiji's legal problems, they peacefully collected and demonstrated near the courthouse in Motihari. Although the officials were perplexed by the challenge to their authority, Gandhiji did not promote violence and instead assisted in crowd control. Gandhiji refused to leave Champaran on humanitarian grounds in court, and the judge released him without bail. Gandhiji's release without bail revealed the potential of civil disobedience to the peasants of Champaran and India, resulting in a civil disobedience victory.
