Question

Answer the following question.
State two reasons to explain why irrigation is necessary for India.

Short Note

Solution

Irrigation is necessary for India because of :

  1. Uneven distribution of rainfall. Rainfall is confined to the short duration of 3-4 months in the rainy season. The rest of the year is more or less dry. The provision of irrigation can make multiple cropping possible.
  2. High yielding variety of crops require regular moisture to increase farm production-Crops like rice, jute, sugarcane require large amounts of water, which can be met only through irrigation.
