Question
Assertion (A): A bird perches on a high power line and nothing happens to the bird.
Reason (R): The level of the bird is very high from the ground.
Options
If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.
If the assertion is true but the reason is false.
If the assertion is false but the reason is true.
Solution
If the assertion is true but the reason is false.
Reason: Electric shock is due to the electric current flowing through a living body. When the bird perches on a single high power line, no current passes through its body. Because its body is at an equipotent surface (i.e.) there is no potential difference. When a man touches the same line, standing barefoot on the ground the electrical circuit is completed through the ground. The hands of man are at high potential and his feet are at low potential. Hence a large amount of current flows through the body of the man and the person, therefore, gets a fatal shock.
