When electric current flows through a conductor, there are several noticeable signs.

1. Heating Effect of Electric Current

Electric current generates heat when it flows through a conductor. Devices like iron boxes use this effect to remove wrinkles from clothes.

The amount of heat produced depends on:

  1. Time (t): The longer the current flows, the more heat is generated.
  2. Resistance (R): Higher resistance produces more heat.
  3. Current (I): A larger current generates more heat.
    If the current is small, the heat might be unnoticeable, but a larger current produces significant warmth.

2. Magnetic Effect of Electric Current

When current flows through a wire, it creates a magnetic field. This can be observed by the deflection of a compass needle placed near the wire. Winding the wire into a coil enhances this effect, creating an electromagnet, which is useful in various applications.

3. Chemical Effect of Electric Current

When current flows through a solution, it causes a chemical reaction, breaking the solution into ions. Depending on the solution and electrodes, effects like

  • Change in colour
  • Metallic deposits on electrodes
  • Bubbles or gas release
    may occur.

Applications include electroplating and electrolysis. These effects are used in practical applications, from heating devices to electromagnets and chemical reactions in solutions.
