Heartbeat Rate:

Heartbeat is the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the heart muscles, which enables the heart to pump blood throughout the body.

  • A healthy person's heart beats around 72 (ranges between 60 and 100) times per minute under normal conditions. With each heartbeat, the heart pumps approximately 75 ml of blood. This pumping action ensures that oxygen and nutrients are circulated to all parts of the body efficiently.
  • Heartbeat is measured in terms of beats per minute (bpm) and can be recorded through medical instruments like an electrocardiogram (ECG).

The rate of heartbeat can change based on activity or emotions.

  • It increases with physical exercise, stress, or strong emotions.
  • It decreases during rest or sleep.

Infants have a higher heart rate compared to adults, meaning they have more beats per minute.

Heart Sounds:

Blood flowing through the heart creates movement and turbulence, especially when the valves close. These normal sounds are described as “lub” and “dub,” and they occur with each heartbeat.

  1. “Lubb”: The first sound, created when the atrioventricular valves (between the upper and lower chambers) close. This occurs when the heart muscles contract to pump blood out.
  2. “Dub”: The second sound, produced when the semilunar valves (between the heart and the arteries) close as the heart relaxes and refills with blood.

Pulse:

Pulse is the rhythmic beating felt in the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. With each heartbeat, blood is pushed through the arteries, causing them to expand and contract, producing a pulsing sensation.

  • The pulse can be detected in areas where arteries are close to the surface, such as the wrist, neck, or ankle.
  • Pulse is measured in beats per minute (bpm) by counting the number of throbs felt in a minute, often at pulse points like the wrist.

Pulse Rate:

Pulse rate refers to the number of times the pulse is felt in one minute, equivalent to the heart rate. It indicates the number of heartbeats per minute and serves as an essential measure of heart health. The pulse rate is a direct indicator of the heartbeat rate, as each pulse felt corresponds to one heartbeat. For most adults, a normal resting pulse rate ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute.

The pulse rate can vary due to several factors:

  • Exercise
  • Emotions
  • Rest and sleep
  • Age
