Question

Both a short day plant and a long day plant can flower simultaneously in a given place. Explain.

Answer in Brief

Solution

  • Short day plants (SDPs), such as Xanthium and Dahlia, only bloom when they experience a lengthy dark period and a brief photoperiod.
  • However, a long day plant (LDP), such as wheat or oats, will only flower if it has a long photoperiod and a brief dark period.
  • In order to enable them to flower, the critical photoperiod is the continuous length of light that cannot be exceeded in SDP and must always be exceeded in LDP.
  • Henbane needs light for more than 11 hours, but xanthium needs light for less than 15.6 hours. Simultaneous flowering is expected for Xanthium (a SDP) and Henbane (DP) throughout the light period of 11 to 15.6 hours.
