Question

Chlorophyll ‘a’ is the primary pigment for light reaction. What are accessory pigments? What is their role in photosynthesis?

Short Note

Solution

Accessory pigments are those pigments, which assist in photosynthesis by capturing energy from the light of different wavelengths, e.g., chlorophyll b, Xanthophylls and carotenoids.

Role in Photosynthesis:

  1. They absorb wavelengths of light not absorbed by chlorophyll a and transfer the energy to chlorophyll.
  2. They also protect chlorophyll a from photo-oxidation.
