It is the process of conversion of fresh precipitate into colloidal particles by shaking it with dispersion medium in the presence of a small amount of suitable electrolyte.

e.g., a reddish-brown coloured colloidal solution is obtained from fresh precipitate of Fe(OH)₃ by shaking it with a small quantity of a dilute solution of FeCl₃.
