Question
Describe any three ways to reduce Cognitive Dissonance.
Answer in Brief
Solution
The three methods for decreasing cognitive dissonance are as follows:
- Modify the conflicting behaviour: This means changing the behaviour, generating cognitive discomfort. A smoker who believes smoking is terrible for his health may give up to reduce cognitive dissonance.
- Alter the conflicting belief: The competing belief or mindset must change to reduce cognitive dissonance. Someone may change their opinion about smoking to reduce cognitive dissonance, for example, if they have conflicting ideas about it, such as that it's pleasant but also bad for their health.
- Find a rationale or justification for the conflicting behaviour: This means figuring out a reason for the conflicting actions. For example, if someone smokes but believes that smoking is unhealthy, he could justify his actions by claiming that he smokes sometimes or to relax.
