1. Gender discrimination is the unequal or disadvantageous treatment of an individual or group of individuals based on their gender.
2. In India, the discriminatory attitude towards men and women has been in existence since olden generations due to the patriarchal structure of the society.
3. Although the constitution of India has granted men and women equal rights, gender disparity still remains one of the biggest social issues in both higher and lower social strata of our country.
4. These are mostly seen in terms of educational opportunities, meaningful careers, political influence, economic advancement, land sharing among brothers and sisters in a family, decision-making in the family, pay disparity at workplaces, religious rituals, etc.
5. The preference for a male child has not only led to discrimination but has also violated several rights of the girl child and women in general.
6. Gender discrimination against women exists in our society in the subtlest forms, as parents choosing a doll game or a fairy story for girls and a Lego or car story for a boy.
7. Families expect the women in the house to shoulder all responsibilities at home, regarding their careers as secondary.
8. Families choosing a bride-to-be for their son who is less educated; always a girl leaving her parents' home and going to her husband's house; a daughter-in-law to take permission from her in-laws to visit her parents' house.
